Family Portraits: Pop-Up Studio Debut

What a fun an exciting day today was.  It was the culmination of a lot of thought and some much needed motivation.  A few weeks ago I was lamenting because I didn’t have studio space.  Not that I do a lot of studio-style portraiture, as I much prefer location shooting, but there are just some things that work best under controlled conditions.  After doing some research, I discovered the Waltham Mills Artist Association.  An old factory in downtown Waltham had been converted to artist lofts and they look incredible.  I met fellow photographer Jon Fischer, who gave me a tour of his spot.  Alas, the studios were for full-time artists, not for short-term rentals.

The WMAA got my mind working though.  I began looking for an alternative. If I couldn’t rent a studio, how could I make my own?  I already had the lighting from my work as a wedding photographer.  I just needed the space.  Then, by coincidence, I found the perfect spot.

When I lived in Boston, I became a member of the Watertown VFW simply because it was easy to get to from my Concord office at the time.  When I moved to Waltham, visits became less convenient.  So last Sunday I made the switch, joining Post 10334 in North Waltham.  Not only was I impressed by the folks I met, but the hall was ideal from a photographic perspective.  Clean white walls, high ceilings, hardwood floors and a lot of natural light.  It was perfect.  A week later and a $1200 equipment purchase from Hunt’s we have a new pop-up studio set and a bunch of adorable munchkins on film.
